La Valle Camonica è nota in tutto il mondo per la straordinaria ricchezza e varietà di incisioni rupestri, inserite nel 1979, quale primo sito italiano, nella Lista del Patrimonio Mondiale dell’UNESCO. Essa rappresenta un luogo di fascino e suggestione davvero unico, in cui l’Uomo e l’ambiente hanno interagito fin dalla Preistoria, caratterizzandola come “La Valle dei Segni”. Il patrimonio del sito UNESCO n.94 “Arte Rupestre della Valle Camonica” è distribuito lungo l’intera Valle, con oltre 180 località sparse su 24 comuni, e attraversa più di 12 mila anni di storia. Riveste un’importanza fondamentale non solo per la quantità di soggetti incisi e per l’evoluzione cronologica, ma anche per lo stretto legame che le incisioni hanno con la storia dell’Uomo: scoprire e conoscere l’arte rupestre camuna permette di compiere un viaggio unico e indimenticabile nella preistoria e protostoria europea per giungere, attraverso le incisioni di età storica (romana, medievale e moderna), sino alle soglie del XX secolo. UNESCO’s heritage n. 94 nomination, “Rock Drawings in Valcamonica”, testifies a bounty of engravings scattered along the entire valley, with more than 180 sites spread over 24 municipalities, covering more than twelve thousand years of history. Its chief importance refers not only to the amount of engraved subjects and their chronological evolution, but also to the close relation between the engraved figures and Human history: discovering and getting to know Camunian rock art is the first step toward a unique and unforgettable journey into European prehistory and protohistory, to arrive, through engravings of historical ages (Roman, medieval, modern) at the threshold of the 20th century.
