DESIGNING GRAND TOUR. 2016/2017 Calabria. Collezione di arazzi. Lanificio Leo e Torri Lana 1885, due aziende del tessile di patrimonio, e Rubbettino, uno degli editori più prestigiosi nel panorama italiano, con la direzione artistica di Studiocharlie e Emilio S. Leo, hanno dato vita a Designing Grand Tour, un progetto/format che si pone l’obiettivo di dimostrare come il design può essere un potente mezzo di interpretazione dell’identità territoriale. Sulle orme dei viaggiatori che dalla fine del XVI secolo si avventurarono lungo la nostra penisola, per scoprirne i tesori e farne la fonte di ispirazione per le loro opere – diari (Norman Douglas, Alexandre Dumas), disegni o dipinti (Willem Schellinks, Edward Lear), è nato Designing Grand Tour, un progetto/format iniziato con un viaggio che ha attraversato la Calabria dall’8 al 13 settembre 2016. I designer Sigrid Calon, Laura Daza, Giulio Iacchetti, Emilio S. Leo, Kensaku Oshiro, Studiocharlie, Victor Vasilev, partendo da Soveria Mannelli (Catanzaro), sede dello storico Lanificio Leo, accompagnati da uno storico dell’arte che conosce bene la regione e ne ha raccontato la storia e il modo in cui la Calabria è stata percepita nel corso del tempo da altri viaggiatori, hanno visitato alcuni dei luoghi più suggestivi della regione: Soriano, Vibo Valentia, Casignana, la fiumara La Verde, Stilo, Rossano, Sibari, la Sila, le aziende Amarelli e Callipo, a bordo di un mezzo dedicato messo a disposizione da Simet. Il viaggio è stato la base comune dalla quale partire per esprimere progettualità differenti, dando vita a 7 arazzi contemporanei e a un libro-racconto. Gli Arazzi sono stati poi tessuti da Torri Lana 1885, protagonista di un’altra tappa fondamentale del viaggio: l’incontro a Gandino. Questo a voler sottolineare che l’Italia della manifattura di patrimonio può essere intesa come un’unica grande fabbrica con un potente motore immateriale di valori e un corpo sparso di saperi in tutto il territorio nazionale. Lanificio Leo and Torri Lana 1885, two textile heritage brands, and Rubbettino, one of the most prestigious publishers in the Italian survey, with the art direction of Studiocharlie and Emilio S. Leo, have created Designing Grand Tour, a project/format that aims to demonstrate how design can be a powerful means of territorial identity interpretation. In the footsteps of those travelers who, since the end of the sixteenth century, ventured along the Italian peninsula, to discover its treasures and make them a source of inspiration for their works – diaries (Norman Douglas, Alexandre Dumas), drawings or paintings (Willem Schellinks, Edward Lear ), was born Designing Grand Tour, a project/format started with a trip that crossed Calabria from 8 to 13 September 2016. the designers Sigrid Calon, Laura Daza, Giulio Iacchetti, Emilio S. Leo, Kensaku Oshiro, Studiocharlie, Victor Vasilev, starting from Soveria Mannelli (Catanzaro), home of the historic Lanificio Leo, accompanied by an art historian who knows the region well and told them the story and the way in which Calabria was perceived over time by other travelers, have visited some of the most beautiful places in the region: Soriano, Vibo Valentia, Casignana, fiumara La Verde, Stilo, Rossano, Sybaris, the Sila, Amarelli and Callipo Companies, on a coach provided by Simet. The trip was the common basis for the designers for expressing different projects, resulting in 7 contemporary tapestries and a book-travelogue. Then Torri Lana 1885, protagonist of another important leg of the journey, the meeting in Gandino, wove the tapestries. This to underline that Italy of heritage craftsmanship can be seen as one big factory with a powerful engine of immaterial values and a wide body of knowledge throughout the national territory.
